The best way to understand chemical bonding may be to take a view appropriate to each individual system, a view which may be quite different for various systems. Sometimes two very different views are appropriate for the same system, and then the combination may even give the parameters needed to estimate the bonding energy by hand. Density Functional Theory, on the other hand, generally tries to take one view as applicable to all systems, and proceeds computationally. In contrast to the author's two previous well-known textbooks, Electronic Structure and the Properties of Solids (1989) and Elementary Electronic Structure (1999), in this book he tries to distill the essence of the representation of electronic structure in a much briefer description. It is shortened by focusing primarily on the bonding energies, the energy gained in assembling atoms as a molecule or a solid, or as a solid with a surface. A central point is that the same description of the electronic structure which gives this cohesion, can also be used to understand all of the other properties, though those other properties are not emphasized here. The effort is characterized by the title, which combines the modern word ?theory? with the ancient effort of ?alchemy? to make sense of the material world.

Size Exclusion Chromatography PDF Download. Download free ebook of Size Exclusion Chromatography in PDF format or read online by Sadao Mori,Howard G. Barth 9783662039106 Published on 2013-03-09 by Springer Science & Business Media

Although size exclusion chromatography (SEC) is perhaps the most popular and widely used technique for determining the molecular weight distribution of polymeric materials, there have been very few texts written on this topic. During the past decade, SEC has experienced a considerable amount of growth in regard to column and detector technology and new applications. With these advances, SEC can now be used for determining absolute molecular weight, polymer chain conformation and size, and branching, as well as polymer solution properties. This book introduces the reader to the fundamentals of SEC with emphasis on practical aspects of the technique, such as column and mobile selection, calibration, new detector capabilities and guidelines for performing SEC on most types of polymers, especially those of industrial importance. This book is intended for either those new to the field of SEC, or for those research workers who require a more comprehensive background.

Theoretical Chemical Engineering PDF Download. Download free ebook of Theoretical Chemical Engineering in PDF format or read online by Christo Boyadjiev 9783642107788 Published on 2010-10-20 by Springer Science & Business Media

The role of theory in science was formulated very brilliantly by Max Planck: Experimenters are the striking force of science. The experiment is a question which science puts to nature. The measurement is the registration of nature’s answer. But before the question is put to nature,it must be formulated. Before the measurement result is used, itmust be explained, i.e., the answer must be understood correctly. These two problems are obligations of the theoreticians. Chemical engineering is an experimental science, but theory permits us to formulate correct experimental conditions and to understand correctly the exp- imental results. The theoretical methods of chemical engineering for modeling and simulation of industrial processes are surveyed in this book. Theoretical chemical engineering solves the problems that spring up from the necessity for a quantitative description of the processes in the chemical industry. They are quite different at the different stages of the quantitative description, i.e., a wide circle of theoretical methods are required for their solutions. Modeling and simulation are a united approach to obtain a quantitative description of the processes and systems in chemical engineering and chemical technology, which is necessary to clarify the process mechanism or for optimal process design, process control, and plant renovation. Modeling is the creation of the mathematical model, i.e., construction of the mathematical description (on the basis of the process mechanism), calculation of the model parameters (using experimental data), and statistical analysis of the model adequacy.

Lasers in Biology and Medicine PDF Download. Download free ebook of Lasers in Biology and Medicine in PDF format or read online by F. Hillenkamp 9781468485509 Published on 2013-03-09 by Springer Science & Business Media

This volume contains the lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Lasers in Biology and Medicine organized by the International School of Quantum Electronics at the Villa Le Pianore, Camaiore, Italy, August 19-31, 1979. Most laser applications in biology and medicine are highly interdisciplinary in nature, drawing from and pertaining to such diverse fields as the physical sciences ( (bio)physics, (bio)chemi stry) , engineering, the biological sciences (cellular research, photobiology) and finally theoretical and clinical medicine. Indeed the group of participants of the summer school did reflect this diversity both in background and interest. The presentations con tained in this volume mainly fall into two categories: tutorial lectures on the most important general subjects, intended to lay a common base for all participants, and a number of more advanced con tributions, serving the purpose of exemplifying selected but typical applications in their current state of development. Intense inter communication, lively discussion, and here and there even future cooperation were the general aims more than a detailed in-depth discussion of one or the other aspect of this large field. In this sense it is the hope of the organizing committee that, despite the inevitable limitations, a broad and reasonably representative cov erage of the field has been achieved and that this volume may be a valuable aid for newcomers to get a good start into this complex subject area for some years to corne.

Fluid Mechanics PDF Download. Download free ebook of Fluid Mechanics in PDF format or read online by L D Landau,E. M. Lifshitz 9781483161044 Published on 2013-09-03 by Elsevier

Fluid Mechanics, Second Edition deals with fluid mechanics, that is, the theory of the motion of liquids and gases. Topics covered range from ideal fluids and viscous fluids to turbulence, boundary layers, thermal conduction, and diffusion. Surface phenomena, sound, and shock waves are also discussed, along with gas flow, combustion, superfluids, and relativistic fluid dynamics. This book is comprised of 16 chapters and begins with an overview of the fundamental equations of fluid dynamics, including Euler's equation and Bernoulli's equation. The reader is then introduced to the equations of motion of a viscous fluid; energy dissipation in an incompressible fluid; damping of gravity waves; and the mechanism whereby turbulence occurs. The following chapters explore the laminar boundary layer; thermal conduction in fluids; dynamics of diffusion of a mixture of fluids; and the phenomena that occur near the surface separating two continuous media. The energy and momentum of sound waves; the direction of variation of quantities in a shock wave; one- and two-dimensional gas flow; and the intersection of surfaces of discontinuity are also also considered. This monograph will be of interest to theoretical physicists.

Protein Structure PDF Download. Download free ebook of Protein Structure in PDF format or read online by Harold A. Scheraga 9781483258973 Published on 2014-07-01 by Academic Press

Protein Structure deals with the chemistry and physics of biologically important molecules—the proteins—particularly the determination of the structure of various proteins, their thermodynamics, their kinetics, and the mechanisms of different reactions of individual proteins. The book approaches the study of protein structure in two ways: firstly, by determining the general features of protein structure, the overall size, and shape of the molecule; and secondly, by investigating the molecule internally along with the various aspects of the internal configuration of protein molecules. It describes in detail experimental methods for determining protein structure in solution, such as the hydrodynamic method, the thermodynamic optical method, and the electrochemical method. The book then explains the results of experiments carried out on insulin, lysozyme, and ribonuclease. The text notes that the experiments, carried out on native and denatured proteins as well as on derivatives prepared by chemical modification (e.g., by methylation, iodination, acetylation, etc.), can lead to greater understanding of secondary and tertiary structures of proteins of known sequence. The book is suitable for biochemists, micro-biologists, cellular researchers, or investigators involved in protein structure and other biological sciences related to muscle physiologists, geneticists, enzymologists, or immunologists.

Download Physical Foundations of Solid-State Devices PDF Free

Physical Foundations of Solid-State Devices PDF Download. Download free ebook of Physical Foundations of Solid-State Devices in PDF format or read online by E. Fred Schubert 9780986382628 Published on 2015-03-10 by E. Fred Schubert

It is beneficial for technical personnel working in the field of microelectronic, optoelectronic, and photonic semiconductor devices to get a good understanding of the physical foundations ofmodern semiconductor devices. Questions that technical personnel may ask are: How areelectrons propagating in the periodic potential of a semiconductor crystal lattice? What are thefoundations of semiconductor heterostructure devices? How does quantum mechanics relateto semiconductor heterostructure devices? This book tries to answer questions such as these. The book provides a basis for the understanding of modern semiconductor devices that havedimensions in the nanometer range, i.e. comparable to the electron de Broglie wavelength. Classical and semi-classical physics no longer gives a full description of a number of physicalprocesses. The inclusion of quantum mechanical principles becomes mandatory and provides a useful description of many physical processes in electronic, optoelectronic, and photonic heterostructure devices. The first part of the book (Chapters 1 – 11) teaches quantum-mechanical principles, including the postulates of quantum mechanics, operators, the uncertainty principle, the Schrödinger equation, non-periodic and periodic potentials, quantum wells, and perturbation theory. The second part of the book (Chapters 12 – 20) applies these principles to semiconductor devices and discusses the density of states, semiconductor statistics, carrier concentrations, doping, tunneling, and some aspects of heterostructure devices. The book may be of particular interest to individuals working in the fields of microelectronics, optoelectronics, and photonics with an educational background in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or Materials Science.
